
The serene suburb of New Fadama in Accra was set agog last night when tens of thousands of Muslims thronged there for the commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, May the peace of Allah be upon him.
Ghana’s Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, led a high-powered government delegation, which included fellow Muslims; Dr Mustapha Abdul Hameed, Minister for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, as well as Boniface Abubakar Sadique, MP for Madina and Minister of State at the Office of the Vice President.
Other dignitaries included MPs, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Zongo Chiefs from across the country, Regional Imams, and international delegations from many countries including representatives of the Carter Foundation from the United States.

The event ground, the New Fadama School Park, was filled to capacity and every available space for standing and sitting was occupied. Outside the event venue itself, the crowd was even more mammoth, with thousands of people from occupying every street in New Fadama making vehicular movement virtually impossible.
The annual commemoration of the birth of the Prophet has become a mini pilgrimage to Fadama by Muslims and the essence of the celebration is to present a unique opportunity for Muslims to profess their love for the Prophet, remember his teachings and renew their commitment the Prophet.
The Chief Imam has been commemorating the Maulid consistently for over six decades.
