Dede Ayew becomes Ghana’s most capped player after 110 outings

Black Stars captain Andre Ayew hit a milestone as Ghana’s all-time most capped player after making his 110th appearance against Switzerland on Thursday, describing it as “an honor of a lifetime.”

The Al Sadd star made history in a special way as he led the national team to a 2-0 win over the Swiss in a final pre-World Cup friendly on Thursday.

The 32-year-old’s 110 appearances take him one more than iconic former striker Asamoah Gyan (109).

“It’s been an honor of a lifetime to play for my country and a blessing to be able to get 100 caps,” he said after Thursday’s victory against Switzerland.

“Thanks to all the players and coaches who have helped me all the way.” Thanks also to the GFA and the Minister of Sports. God bless our homeland, Ghana, and make us great and strong.”

Ayew made his 100th appearance for Ghana in November 2021, scoring the only goal against South Africa in a crucial World Cup qualifying match in Cape Coast.

Ayew made his debut for Ghana as a teenager in 2007 and has worked his way up to captain the four-time African champions.

He has 23 goals to go along with his 106 appearances.

With 10 goals, he is Ghana’s all-time leading scorer in the Africa Cup of Nations.

He became Black Stars captain in 2019, ten years after leading Ghana’s under-20 team to conquer the World Cup in Egypt.

His appearance in the 2022 World Cup will be his third after playing in the 2010 and 2014 editions.
