Ayawaso East MP Mahama Naser Toure dies at 60

The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East constituency in Accra, Mahama Naser Toure has died at the age of 60 following a short illness.

Hon. Toure died on Sunday afternoon at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in the, parliamentary sources confirmed.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) politician had represented the Ayawaso East constituency since 2013, winning four consecutive terms in Parliament. In the December 2024 general election, he secured re-election with more than 70% of the vote.

At the time of his death, Hon. Toure served as Vice Chairman of Parliament’s Energy Committee.

He was also a member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee.

Reports indicate he would be laid to rest on Monday in accordance with Islamic traditions.

Born on 17 March 1965 in Nima, Accra, Mr Toure first entered Parliament following the 2012 elections. He had been a prominent figure in the constituency, known for his work on energy and transport issues.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across Ghana’s political spectrum for the veteran legislator, who was seen as a dedicated representative of his constituents.

The death creates a vacancy in Parliament, which will likely necessitate a by-election in the coming months.
