Gonja chiefs have thrown their weights behind the proposal to create a new region out of the Northern Region proposals to carve out a new region from the Northern region.
The Chiefs’ support was contained in a statement released on Saturday after an emergency meeting of the Gonja traditional council in Tamale,
The government last year set up a Commission of Enquiry which toured some regions to hear proposals from stakeholders for demarcations of proposed new regions. The Commission’s visits gave the public the opportunity to lobby and advance reasons for the creation new regions. The proposed new regions out of the Northern Region are Savanna and the North East regions.
With a referendum expected to determine whether a new region will be created or not, the Traditional Council’s emphatic support is expected to drive a ‘yes’ vote from the people.
