Ramadan 2023: UNICEF calls for solidarity with vulnerable children in need

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has launched a Zakat-compliant programme, calling on the muslim World to show solidarity with vulnerable children in need as the Islamic fasting in the Holy Month of Ramadan begins.

UNICEF’s Zakat-compliant programmes provide lifesaving assistance to children in Burkina Faso, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

During the holy month of Ramadan, UNICEF joins Muslim communities across the globe in calling for solidarity and generosity towards families and children who are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

At sunset, as Muslims worldwide break their fast, united over shared meals and prayers, families in Burkina Faso, Afghanistan and Pakistan are struggling to survive. Millions in these countries are experiencing extreme poverty and grappling and have limited access to food, water, and shelter.

“Ramadan is an opportunity for increased reflection, appreciation for our blessings, and extending empathy and support to those less fortunate, particularly the most vulnerable, such as children. With your support, we can be there for children and families in need during this Ramadan and after,” said Carla Haddad Mardini, UNICEF’s Director of Private Sector Fundraising and Partnerships.

Through UNICEF’s Zakat-compliant programmes, it will provide lifesaving assistance to children in Burkina Faso, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

  • Burkina Faso is the epicentre of a multidimensional humanitarian crisis affecting the Sahel region, driven by a combination of factors including armed conflict, food insecurity linked to climate change and health crises. An estimated 172,124 are children are suffering from severe wasting and require urgent lifesaving assistance.
  • In Pakistan, the catastrophic flooding has triggered a cascade of crises putting an estimated 1.6 million children are at risk of severe malnutrition.
  • Following 40 years of war, Afghanistan is one of the hardest places in the world to be a child. Through Ramadan UNICEF will provide approximately 24,000 vulnerable households with cash assistance.

UNICEF relies on voluntary contributions to fund its humanitarian work, and every donation can make a difference in the lives of children. Your Sadaqah gift will help provide lifesaving assistance to children affected by emergencies, and support ongoing programs that promote child health, education, and protection.
