The Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, made a special “good luck” wish for Koforidua Zongo as he launched the 8th edition of the annual Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup, creating a scene of pride for one’s birthplace.
Giving his best wishes to all 30 teams participating in this year’s tournament, Hon. Ussif, all smiles, made a special mention of Koforidua Zongo while concluding his keynote address at the packed gathering at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra.
The Koforidua Zongo team will be embarking on more than an hour’s journey to Fadama in Accra for their maiden participation in the special tournament, established to honour the National Chief Imam.
It is one of six new communities that have joined the tournament for the first time as the competition keeps growing bigger and better year after year.
Declaring the competition duly launched, Hon. Ussif rooted for the Eastern Regional Suburb, which is considered one of the biggest Zongos in the country.
“On this note, I have the singular honour as the sector minister of sports to declare the 8th Sheikh Shaributu Ramadan Cup duly launched,” he said.
“I wish all the participating teams the best of luck, especially Koforidua Zongo.”
The two-day community tournament is slated for April 29 and 30 at the New Fadama Astro Turf.

Even though he hails from Tantaala in the Northern Region of Ghana, Hon. Ussif was born in Koforidua Zongo on August 16, 1979.
Since being appointed Sports Minister in 2021, the MP Yagaba-Kubori constituency has been involved in the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup, supporting the tournament as it grows from strength to strength.
He expressed his ministry’s continuous support for the tournament, which he says makes it “possible that Ghana Sports will grow bigger and bigger.”
