National Chief Imam to lead virtual Eid al Fitr prayers on Sunday

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu will lead a virtual national Eid al Fitr prayers at the premises of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

The virtual eid prayers, which is being organised with the support of government, will have in attendance President Akufo-Addo to show solidarity to the Muslim community on one of the holiest days on the Muslim calendar.

For the Eid prayer itsel, Sheikh Sharubutu will lead a handful of Muslims including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and sone leading Islamic clerics and leaders who will strictly observe social distancing.

Despite the restrictions on religious gathering, the Zongo Mail understands the virtual national eid prayer for just a handful of people has been necessitated by the significance of the day to Muslims in the country.

The national prayer is to symbolise the importance of the day, and also will served as a platform to pray for the nation at the end of the month-long spiritual exercise of fasting.

Meanwhile a press statement by the Office of the National Chief Imam has urged Muslims to observe their Eid prayers at home by following the Chief Imam on television Sunday.

“Following the COVID-19 preventive restrictions on social gathering, a virtual EIDUL-FITR celebration prayer will be led by the Eminent National Chief Imam supported by the muslim leaders at the Ghana Broadcasting corporation house on Sunday 24th may 2020 at 9:00am prompt,” the statement said.

“Accordingly all muslims in the country are advised to celebrate the 2020 EIDUL-FITR with families at home by following the National Chief Imam on the state television.”

“We wish to take this opportunity to wish muslims in Ghana and beyond a happy COVID-19 EIDUL-FITR 2020 celebration.”
