Former Youth Sports minister Dr. Mustapha Ahmed to be buried with military honors on Sunday upon arrival of remains from India

The body of former Ghanaian Minister Dr. Mustapha Ahmed will be returned home this weekend from India for burial, his family announced on Friday.

In a statement, the family said Dr. Ahmed’s remains will arrive on Saturday ahead of a funeral service and burial scheduled for Sunday in Accra.

Before entering politics, Dr. Ahmed served as a dentist in the Ghanaian military. High-ranking military members will attend the honours ceremony on Sunday to recognise his previous military service.

“The body of our late brother, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, who passed away in India on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, will be flown to Ghana on Saturday, February 11th, 2023,” the family’s announcement said.

“On Sunday, the late statesman’s body will be taken to the National Mosque for burial prayers before being laid to rest in a military cemetery.”

The former Minister of Sports and lawmaker died at age 63 while undergoing medical treatment in India earlier this week.

Well-wishers have been gathering at the family home in Spintex to mourn Dr. Ahmed, who was considered a chieftain by Ghana’s Bissa community. His sudden passing while seeking care in India has shocked many in the West African nation he served in multiple capacities.

The return of Dr. Ahmed’s body on Saturday will be followed by Sunday’s funeral proceedings to memorialise the beloved former minister and MP. Ghana is mourning the loss of a key pillar of society.
