Dede Ayew becomes first African to score at 2022 World Cup

Ghana’s skipper Andre Dede Ayew became the first African to score a goal after the Black Stars’ 3-2 loss to Portugal on Thursday, making Ghana the first African country to score.

Andre Ayew and Osman Bukari scored the goals for the Black Stars, and the duo happened to be the only Africans with goals after all opening group matches.

The nail-biting encounter at the Stadium 974 in Doha saw Dede respond quickly to a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty after connecting on a cross from Kudus Mohammed.

Andre Ayew leveled Cristiano Ronaldo’s 65th-minute penalty before substitute Osman Bukari further reduced the deficit after Rafael Leao had made it 3-1 for Portugal.

But his celebration was short-lived as Portugal grabbed two quick goals to extend their lead before Bukari pulled one back to reduce the deficit.

Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, and Cameroon had all failed to score in their opening games.

Prior to this game, African representatives had tried 44 shots, with 12 being on target.

It was Dede’s third goal in three World Cup appearances, as Bukari grabbed his first in his maiden appearance at the tournament.
