Two shot in political clash at Mamobi

Four others injured as campaign walk turns violent

Two people have been shot and four others injured during a political clash in Accra, Ghana’s capital.

The incident occurred on Sunday in the Mamobi area during what was meant to be a routine campaign walk.

Supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were involved in the altercation.

Eyewitnesses say the violence erupted when motorcycle riders from one group encountered supporters from the other.

“After our peace walk, it is rather unfortunate that this happened,” one witness told reporters. He claimed NDC riders had confronted NPP supporters.

The clash reportedly began as a dispute over which group would pass through an area first.

It’s alleged an NPP supporter fired several shots from a pistol as the confrontation intensified.

Two of the injured were taken to the police hospital, while four others are being treated at Mamobi Hospital.

The Regional Police Command was deployed to contain the situation.

COP Mohammed Fuseini Suraji, Director-General of Police Operations, said an investigation is underway. He called for calm and urged both parties to exercise restraint.

Keep-fit walks are common weekend campaign activities for political parties in Ghana.

The country is due to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in December.
