Dr. Bawumia donates 20,000 GHC to Bissas during Sukuma in Accra
The inaugural Sukuma festival for the Greater Accra Bissa community, held on Saturday at the Alajo Astroturf, received significant political attention with a donation of GHS 20,000 from Vice President and NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
This contribution was made towards the hosting of the cultural event, which was held for the first time in the nation’s capital.

A delegation from his office, led by Mr. Karim Dubuire, presented the amount on his behalf while urging attendees to support the NPP.
In a speech delivered by Mr. Dubuire, who is also a Council of Elders member, the vice president appealed for votes to help him realise his presidential ambitions whilst calling for peace among the youth.
“The NPP has delivered on its promises, for which it will be fair for Bissas across the country to give their mandate,” he said.
He highlighted various development projects completed under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, including the Alajo Astroturf, which hosted the event.
The NPP delegation included Mr. Karim Dubuir, the CEO of Zongo Development Fund, Dr Alhaji Arafat Sulemana Arafat, Ahmed Ayuba, Head of Corporate Affairs at Zongo Development Fund, and Mr. Hanan Abdul Wahab, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Pusiga.
Despite being natives of the Upper East, there is a large number of Bissas in Accra who are expected to return home in December to vote. The occasion was therefore used to introduce the NPP parliamentary candidate for Pusiga Constituency to the gathering.

Saturday’s event showcased unity and togetherness, with two major political parties each making cash donations and presenting speeches from their candidates.
Sukuma, a cultural event for Bissas far from their hometown in the Upper East, was being marked in Greater Accra for the first time. The event also featured the outdooring ceremony of Kir Salisu Dabre IV, adding to the cultural significance of the day.
The festival, organised by the Regional BDA in collaboration with the council of Bissa Chiefs, was held under the theme “Preserving our culture for national unity.”
The Sukuma festival, inaugurated in 2022 in the Ashanti Region by the Bissa Development Association (BDA), aims to unite the Bissa diaspora through cultural celebration.
Cultural highlights of the day included performances by the Ashalaja Cultural Troop and the Obuase dancing troop, both composed of performers under 13 years old. Their energetic displays of traditional Bissa dances captivated the audience, while musician Queenzy Baby added contemporary Bissa music to the festivities.
The success of this inaugural event in Greater Accra sets the stage for future Sukuma celebrations across the country, highlighting the growing importance of the Bissa diaspora in Ghana’s cultural and political landscape.
