Alhaji Sani ‘Dendem’ stalwart Colts Football manager dies at 75

Alhaji Sannie, widely known as Sani Dendem, a stalwart of Colts football in Ghana and the owner of Division Two side Anokye Stars, has passed away in Kumasi at the age of 75.

According to reports from Kessben TV, the sad event occurred on Thursday, May 9, 2024, after Dendem had been battling an illness.

Dendem began his involvement in Colts (youth) football in Ghana at just 20 years old and dedicated over five decades to nurturing young talent in the country before his demise at 75.

He is arguably one of Ghana’s greatest-ever talent spotters, having produced over 5,000 players during his 48-year career, including more than 2,500 who went on to represent various national teams and clubs both domestically and abroad.

Some of the star players groomed by Dendem include former Black Stars strikers Tony Yeboah and Isaac Boakye, ex-Asante Kotoko coach Michael Osei, Stanley Aborah, Osei Barnes, Prince Opoku Polly, William Thompson, Kofi Owusu, Francis Akwaffo, Kofi Abanga, and Torric Jebrin among many others.

Tributes poured in from across the Ghanaian football community, honouring Dendem’s immense contribution to developing generations of talented players at the college level.

Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku expressed condolences on Dendem’s passing, stating: “His legacy and impact on our game through his work with Colts clubs will be cherished forever. Ghana has lost one of the true giants of youth football development.”

Funeral arrangements for the late Colts pioneer are expected to be announced in the coming days as Ghanaian football mourns the loss of one of its most famous and prolific contributors to the game at the grassroots level.
