Ajax Amsterdam and Black Stars midfielder Kudus Mohammed was named Sports Personality of the Year at the 47th edition of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards, held on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Kudus beat competition from the 200-meter national record holders, Joseph Paul Amoah and Abraham Mensah, who both won bronze at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The Nima-born star also, for the second time in succession, took home the Foreign-based Footballer of the Year award, winning the category ahead of Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew.
The most prestigious awards are held to honor sports personalities who performed incredibly well in the year under review.
SWAG, in collaboration with MTN and HD+, awarded athletes in various categories for their outstanding performances.
The huge event saw the gracing of the country’s Inspector General of Police, Dr Akuffo Dampare, the Youth and Sports Minister, Hon Mustapha Ussif, Nana Prah Agyensaim VI (Paramount Chief of the Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Area), and many more, including the SWAG President and renowned sports journalist Kwabena Yeboah, who were all present at the awards ceremony.
Joseph Paul Amoah won the SWAG Male Athlete of the Year award, beating Benjamin Azamati to the prize.
