Police brutality leaves several students of Islamic Senior High hospitlised

At least 25 persons have been hospitalised as police officers opened fire during a protest by unarmed Islamic Senior High school students in Kumasi.

The victims were part of students who took to the streets and allegedly blocked the Abrepo Junction-Barekese road to protest over what they say was frequent vehicular knockdowns in front of their school.

Videos circulating on social media showed police resorting to the use of tear gas to quell the protest, resulting in some students going unconscious while others were left with some degrees of injuries.

According to Ghana Ambulance officials, most of the students suffered respiratory challenges due to the tear gas.

Monday’s protest is said to have been ignited by an incident last Friday, where a female teacher who was moving out of campus had her vehicle run into by another vehicle on the main road just as she entered the road.

This, allegedly brought to about eight, the number of knockdowns and accidents in front of the school in 2022 alone.

The incident caused many parents to troop to the school to check for the safety of their wards amid condemnation of the police brutalities.

Ambulances were sent to the school to convey the injured students to hospital.
